Matcha in Pregnancy

Can I drink matcha while pregnant?

Limited Matcha tea

Yes, in moderation, and it needs counting more carefully than green tea. Matcha is powdered whole leaf, so you drink the leaf rather than an infusion of it. Measured samples hold 18.9 to 44.4 mg of caffeine per gram of powder, and every milligram counts towards the 200 mg daily limit along with coffee, tea, cola and chocolate.

Why be careful: Very high caffeine concentration — moderate intake.

Matcha arrives with a wellness reputation, and that makes it easy to forget that it is one of the stronger caffeinated drinks on a café menu. Its rating comes down to one number you can control: how many grams of powder go in the cup.

Why one cup varies so much

With an ordinary green tea bag, hot water pulls out part of the caffeine and you throw the leaves away. Matcha is the leaf itself, stone-ground and whisked into the water, so the whole caffeine content ends up in the drink. A 2020 review in Molecules found 18.9 to 44.4 mg of caffeine per gram of matcha, against 11.3 to 24.67 mg per gram across other green teas.

That spread comes from the powder (grade, harvest, leaf age) and the dose. A barista who uses one level scoop and one who uses two heaped ones are serving different drinks under the same name.

How to work out your cup

Powder in the cupApproximate caffeineShare of the daily 200 mg
1 g19–44 mgUp to a quarter
2 g38–89 mgUp to almost half
4 g76–178 mgUp to almost all of it
For comparison: cup of brewed tea (NHS)75 mgAbout a third
For comparison: cup of instant coffee (NHS)100 mgHalf

The grams-per-serving figure is usually printed on the tin, or you can weigh the scoop once at home. Without a number, assume the top of the range. A strong 4 g bowl can come close to the full day's allowance, which leaves no room for a coffee or two mugs of tea later.

Pick a fixed dose and stick to it. One measured gram or two of powder a day keeps matcha in a predictable slot, and you can plan the rest of your tea and coffee around it. In a café, ask for a single scoop.

Lattes, sweet mixes and the folate question

Milk does not change the caffeine. Sugar is the other thing to check: ready-mixed matcha latte powders and flavoured syrups add it, and the ingredients list shows where it sits. That matters around the glucose tolerance test in the second half of pregnancy, and more so if you have gestational diabetes.

Matcha also carries the green tea catechins that the green tea page covers in connection with folate. Take your folic acid an hour away from matcha, tea or coffee, and keep the dose as prescribed.

One strong matcha is not an emergency. Leave out caffeine for the rest of the day and plan a smaller dose next time.

Contact your doctor or maternity unit the same day if you have a racing or irregular heartbeat that does not settle, chest pain, vaginal bleeding, or you faint. Those symptoms need checking whatever caused them, and say how much caffeine you had.

Matcha in pregnancy — at a glance

Matcha is allowed in pregnancy in moderation and counts towards the daily caffeine limit of 200 mg from all sources, the figure used by both the NHS and EFSA. Because matcha is powdered whole tea leaf drunk in the water, it delivers the leaf's entire caffeine content: a 2020 review in Molecules reports 18.9 to 44.4 mg of caffeine per gram of matcha, compared with 11.3 to 24.67 mg per gram for other green teas. A 2 g serving therefore holds roughly 38 to 89 mg and a 4 g serving roughly 76 to 178 mg, against about 75 mg for a cup of brewed tea and 100 mg for a cup of instant coffee in NHS figures. Check the grams per serving on the packet, assume the high end when the dose is unknown, and order a single scoop in cafés. Milk does not alter the caffeine, but sweetened latte mixes and syrups add sugar, which matters around the glucose tolerance test and with gestational diabetes. Matcha is also a concentrated source of green tea catechins, so take folic acid an hour apart from it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drink matcha while pregnant?

Yes, within the 200 mg daily caffeine limit that NHS and EFSA guidance set for pregnancy, counting every source together. Matcha sits in the limited group because one cup can use a large share of that allowance, depending on how much powder goes into it.

How much caffeine is in a cup of matcha?

It depends on the grams of powder. A 2020 review in Molecules reports 18.9 to 44.4 mg of caffeine per gram of matcha. That puts a 2 g serving at roughly 38 to 89 mg and a 4 g serving at roughly 76 to 178 mg. Check the scoop size or the serving given on the packet and multiply.

Does matcha have more caffeine than green tea?

Usually, yes. With brewed green tea you throw the leaves away; with matcha you drink them, ground into the water. The same review found matcha higher in caffeine per gram than other green teas (11.3 to 24.67 mg/g). NHS figures put a cup of brewed green tea at about 75 mg, and a generous matcha can go well past that.

Is a matcha latte better or worse?

The milk changes nothing about the caffeine: the powder decides that. Café lattes often use more than one scoop, so ask how many grams or scoops go in. Sweetened powders and syrups add sugar, which is worth watching around the glucose tolerance test and with gestational diabetes.

Does matcha affect folic acid?

Matcha is a concentrated source of the same green tea catechins discussed on our green tea page. The practical advice carries over: take your folic acid supplement an hour away from tea or coffee, and keep taking it.
